A Moral Problem For Free Will
(Plenarvortrag, Englisch, Ort: HS E.002)

The aim of this talks is to raise a new challenge for free will. The starting point is the observation that a certain kind of free will plays a specific and under-examined role in our everyday and philosophical thinking: it makes certain responses that are typically morally unacceptable acceptable or at least less unacceptable. The question I will pose is this: what is the thing that could play that role? I will discuss several possible answers and I will show that they are not convincing. I will argue that this discussion has an interesting upshot for how we should approach free will. To anticipate: our metaphysical thinking should be guided by our moral thinking.
