Understanding Voluntariness
(Political Philosophy, English)
hilosophers do not agree on the meaning of voluntariness. In this talk, I explore some possible ways of understanding voluntariness and present my own point of view about how the concept should be used. I ask why we want to know whether an action or decision is voluntarily made and look at some writer__s ideas about when this is the case. After rejecting Robert Nozick__s (1974) notion of voluntariness and delving into Serena Olsaretti__s (1998 & 2018), I conclude that it is most sensible to understand voluntariness as depending on one__s subjective assessment of the acceptability and availability of one__s options and on one__s ability to act in accordance with what one considers to be the best option.
