Understanding Voluntariness
(Political Philosophy, English)

Philosophers do not agree on the meaning of voluntariness. In this talk, I explore some possible ways of understanding voluntariness and present my own point of view about how the concept should be used. I ask why we want to know whether an action or decision is voluntarily made and look at some writer's ideas about when this is the case. After rejecting Robert Nozick's (1974) notion of voluntariness and delving into Serena Olsaretti's (1998 & 2018), I conclude that it is most sensible to understand voluntariness as depending on one's subjective assessment of the acceptability and availability of one's options and on one's ability to act in accordance with what one considers to be the best option.
